AIS student named 2020 Udall Scholar. Sierra Campbell joins only 55 students nationally to receive this prestigious honor.
Sierra is a citizen of the Apsáalooke Nation of Montana and is majoring in Education with minors in American Indian Studies and Environmental Studies.She is passionate about shifting the narrative of healthcare to be more holistic and culturally relevant for communities. Sierra plans on dedicating her career to supporting Indigenous communities by uplifting Indigenous youth through leadership programs that are culturally tailored and engage environmental components. She enjoys education, creating programming, and working with communities. Her minor in environmental studies has allowed her to gain the tools necessary to conduct research. She is a member of the National Honor Society of Leadership and Success and a Doris Duke Conservation Scholar. In her free time, Sierra enjoys jingle dancing and spending time with her family.
“I hope to reach these goals by working with communities in programs that address the holistic health and well-being of Native American youth by integrating cultural and environmental components,” Campbell said. “Throughout my life, I have been supported by various Native American communities and thus want to dedicate my professional career to do the same.”
The Udall scholarship honors the legacies of Morris Udall and Stewart Udall, whose careers had a significant impact on Native American self-governance, health care, and the stewardship of public lands and natural resources. The 2020 Udall Scholars have been chosen from 48 colleges and universities. A 16-member independent review committee selected the recipients on the basis of commitment to careers in the environment, Native health care, or tribal public policy; leadership potential; record of public service; and academic achievement. Each scholarship provides up to $7,000 for the Scholar’s junior or senior year. Way to go Sierra!
